Victoria Looks to Protect WFH Rights

#legislation #rights #vic #workfromhome Aug 05, 2025

Workers in Victoria could benefit from Australian-first laws that protect work for home rights, up to two days per week.

During a conference in early August, Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has outlined plans to legislate protections for workers before 2026’s state election. This would encapsulate workers in both private and public sectors for jobs that can “reasonably” be done from home.

What are the benefits of working from home?

For Employers -

  • Allows a wider hiring pool for employers to choose from
  • Less overhead costs in offices
  • Reduces burn out, which impacts absenteeism and presenteeism
  • Longer business days with staff in different time zones

For Employees -

  • Increased work/life balance
  • Minimal commute time
  • Can minimise social distractions
  • Increased job satisfaction

As we’ve seen an increase in WFH in Australia, there have been other tangible benefits across the country including...

  • Reduced gender pay gap
  • Reduced unemployment rates
  • Reduced congestion
  • People who may not suit a full time in-office job have increased opportunity – such as those with disabilities, parents, and carers
