Paid Parental Leave Increasing by 2 Weeks

Do you have or are about to welcome a new bub? This one is for you!

Starting today, Paid Parental Leave (PPL) in Australia is increasing by 2 weeks, bringing the total to 120 days. This applies to babies born or adopted on or after July 1st, 2025.

Even better, from July 1st, 2026, it will increase again to 130 days!

In a two-parent household?

You can split the leave between both parents. In 2025, 15 days (up from the previous 10) are reserved for the partner who isn’t the primary carer — this increases to 20 days in 2026. The rest of the leave can be shared however suits your family best.

Single parents are entitled to claim the leave in it’s entirety.

New Superannuation Payments Included

From now on, eligible parents will also receive a 12% superannuation contribution on their Paid Parental Leave.

  • This will be paid as a lump sum at the end of the financial year in which you received your PPL.

  • It includes an interest component and will be deposited into the super account your employer usually pays into.

No need to apply separately — Services Australia will notify the government, and the payment will be made automatically to account you usually receive your superannuation.

What Next?

Employees will still need to lodge their Paid Parental Leave with Services Australia to receive any payments, however the super contribution will be automatically handled by the government.

Your responsibilities remain the same. If you’re unsure about how it all works, the Australian Government has created a toolkit to guide you through the process. Or feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] — we’re happy to help!
