Leadership Insight - Employee Retention

#2026 #humanresources #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #learning May 28, 2026

The signs of upcoming resignations tend to show up quietly, a shift in engagement, less questions being asked, a decrease in contribution. Some of the most common signals:

  • They stop volunteering ideas or opinions in spaces where they once did.
  • Conversations get shorter and more transactional, updates replace dialogue.
  • Interest in future projects, planning or growth discussions quietly disappear.
  • Discretionary effort drops, the work gets done, but nothing more.
  • They begin protecting their time and disengaging from the informal moments that build culture.

These signals may not seem like much alone, but they can be early indicators. The leaders who notice this:

  • Are paying more attention to the relationship, not just the output.
  • They have created enough psychological safety that a conversation can happen before a decision is made.
