R U OK?

#eap #employeewellbeing #healthii #mentalhealth Sep 11, 2025

Today is R U Ok Day, but it’s a question we should be asking year round. Whether it’s to a friend, a colleague, a family member; the simple question can make a big difference.

Remember to Check In With Yourself

Before asking the question to someone else, it’s important to touch base with yourself and see how you’re going. It’s hard to be there for someone else if you’re not in a good headspace too. To consider:

  • Are you in a good headspace?
  • Am I in a position to listen and give time as needed?
  • Am I ready in case they answer that they’re not ok?
  • Is this an appropriate moment to ask?

How To Ask?

When you’re ready to ask, just remember Alec.

Ask – it doesn’t need to be “R U OK,” you could ask “how are you doing” or flag a specific concern such as “you’ve seemed quiet lately, is there anything going on?”

Listen – be an open ear for them to open up to if they need.

Encourage Action – whether taking time for self care or seeking professional help it’s important to give a nudge in the right direction.

Check In – follow up down the road to make sure they’re doing ok, and that they know that you continue to be there for them.

R U OK’s website is a great launching pad for different resources, guides, and ways to access professional support.

How else can we support mental health in the workplace?

There’s a lot of ways employer’s can set the standard for a psychologically safe workplace that prioritises positive mental health. One way is by implementing an Employee Assistance Program. Employii, in partnership with Aster Health Group, has launched a bespoke EAP that provides a confidential support service for staff facing personal or work-related challenges.

Find out more about this service here, or get in touch with us at [email protected] to see how we can help!
